Year 1 - 25.10.24
Good Afternoon and Happy Half Term!
It was fantastic to meet with everyone this week during parents' evening and have the chance to share the progress your children have made so far in Year 1. We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year, and your support truly shines through in the children’s achievements!
Highlights from Our Week
Our highlight this week was, without a doubt, the visit to New Park. We were blessed with beautiful weather, which made the experience all the more memorable. The children had a fantastic time planting their mini forest, learning about different types of trees, and best of all—getting a little muddy! It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and curiosity grow.
Exciting News: Little Wandle eBooks
Just in time for half-term, the Little Wandle eBooks are now up and running! You’ll find your child’s login details in their reading records, below their other passwords. Alongside this, I’ve included a user guide to help get you started, and you can access the eBooks through the following link: Little Wandle eBooks Login.
Phonics Update
In phonics this week, we introduced new phase 5 sounds:
- ir (as in bird)
- ie (as in tie)
- ue (as in blue)
- u (as in unicorn)
Our new tricky words are oh, their, people, and your. If you can, please continue reading with your child over half-term. Little and often makes such a difference, and these small moments will help reinforce the learning from this term.
Handwriting Practice
Many of the children have shown a keen interest in our handwriting sessions! I’ve attached some "long ladder" letters for extra practice at home. We start these letters at the bottom of the line, so they learn the correct starting points and flow.
Maths: Part-Part-Whole Models
In Maths, we’ve been working with our part-part-whole model for addition and writing number sentences to match. It’s a fantastic visual way for the children to understand how numbers fit together, and they’ve made wonderful progress.
Creative Arts
To wrap up the term, we completed a collaborative art project inspired by Eric Carle, creating a caterpillar for our book area! Working as a team, the children shared ideas, practised their skills, and felt so proud to see the final result.
Thank you for all your support so far this year. Have a wonderful, safe, and restful half term!
Best Wishes,
The Year 1 Team
